View Full Version : ShopWindow Entertainment Notification
Hi guys,
Some of you may remember that a while ago ShopWindow announced that it was going to change the categories around so that they displayed similar to what is below:
Entertainment (Parent)
Books (Child)
Magazine Subscriptions (Grandchild)
Adult Books (Grandchild)
Audio Books (Grandchild)
DVDs (Child)
Adult (Grandchild)
VHS (Grandchild)
BLU-RAY (Grandchild)
HD-DVD (Grandchild)
Movie Downloads (Grandchild)
Music (Child)
CDs (Grandchild)
Musical Instruments (Grandchild)
Cassettes & Vinyl (Grandchild)
Music Downloads (Grandchild)
Video Gaming (Child)
Console Accessories (Grandchild)
Consoles (Grandchild)
Retro Games (Grandchild)
Video Games (Grandchild)
However, since version 2 started getting nearer and nearer completion this other project was put to one side. I am now looking to revive this and would like to let you all know that this will happen next week. This change will take effect on Thursday the 22nd of May.
Please see this thread for more details:

This is something i'm still very much looking forward to seeing change, although I still think that consoles definately needs splitting down further into each of the main 3 consoles, to cover each one properly and that the categories for music games and movies needs a lot more work and categorising to make it functional.
Hi Amoochi,
I completely understand your wishes and I was looking into ways to achieve this ranging from using refine by's to extra categories.
If you take a look at V2 and navigate to Video Games > Consoles and look in the brand refine by, the top three for me are Sony (obviously relating to Playstation), Microsoft (relating to the Xbox) and Nintendo (Wii, DS). Once clicking on these it does give you the brand but I am aware that it may not break it down to the platform.
I was thinking along the lines of:
Entertainment (Parent)
Video Gaming (Child)
Nintendo Wii Consoles (Grandchild)
Nintendo Wii Console Accessories (Grandchild)
Nintendo Wii Video Games (Grandchild)
Playstation 3 Consoles (Grandchild)
Playstation 3 Console Accessories (Grandchild)
Playstation Video Games (Grandchild)
Xbox 360 Console (Grandchild)
Xbox 360 Console Accessories (Grandchild)
Xbox 360 Video Games (Grandchild)
Other Consoles (Grandchild)
Other Console Accessories (Grandchild)
Other Video Games (Grandchild)
Retro Games (Grandchild)
However, I feared that this was including too many categories and also because it is such a major structural change it would mean including more category IDs but also where would we put the original Consoles category ID 576? Anybody deeplinking directly to this category using c=576 in their deeplink will now be directed elsewhere.
Keeping the structure as it is now is the best way, that I can see, of minimising the impact that this category reformation has on you all.

The benefits of such a better category system far outway the minor inconvenience of having to redo a few links in some templates, considering in time most people would eventually be upgrading to v2 and needing to redo their modifications anyway.
The major gripe virtually every single person that contacts me about my shopping sections has, is the categories and searching and the way they both work, but mainly the categories and how basic and unrefined they are.
Some sacrifices need to be made by us publishers if we want a better client and as said, in my opinion having to redo a few templates for such better categorisation is a very minor sacrifice compared to the extra functionality it would provide.

For those that drive traffic to sites via a membership base then the change is insignificant. For those that rely on SEO natural traffic then it is a different story.
Upgrading to version 2 is not possible as an upgrade - replacing version 1 with version 2 is the only option. Url constructs are fundamentally different and anyone replacing version 1 with version 2 will have to write some fairly fancy 301 redirect routines if they want to stand any chance of maintaining their search engine efforts.

Yeah, that's what I meant. :p
By upgrading I meant like changing from a 2 bedroom house to a 3 bedroom house, not just adding an extension...
