I'm sure we all concentrate on Google when doing SEO on our sites and have read pages and pages of tips and tricks to get our own pages higher up the search rankings. We're constantly told how clever Google's algorithms are and how relevant the search results are so can anyone explain this junk:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=active&q=diadora+ayrton+senna+formula+low&btnG=Search

The first 20+ pages of results are absolutely filled with crap. I've seen this for other more common search terms aswell.

To satisfy my curiousity can anyone explain firstly why Google thinks this is high quality content and secondly what possible benefit the people generating this crap are gaining from swamping the seach results with random text?

Interesting phenomenon that has sprung up over the last few weeks - lots of discussions around the world.

Try this for starters - http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3452448.htm -draw your own conclusions but be careful what you click!

A little more investigation shows that they are comment spamming for indexing purposes - for example, see http://www.google.com/search?q=oqxxjou&hl=en&safe=active&start=10&sa=N and you will see what I mean.

Forget Google!

Thanks Paul. Seems like Google is pretty screwed up.

I'm fairly new to the world of search engines and website promotion and am baffled daily by occurences like this. Luckily I don't rely on my sites for an income.

Those are some pretty screwed up results there. Hope things clear up soon.
