Customizing the front page

Hi does anyone know, or can point me in right direction of a tutorial or manual

my current websites are simple e.g the menu on the left handside and 9 or 12 hotpics in the middle..

how can i customize this to something like the front page of

www.shopwindow.com

1/. how to have a horizontal menu-bar
2/. Search box customized with relevant colour
2/. how to box the categegories in the middle, and to change the colour theme of the box.
3/. how to have featured retailers rolling across..

i wish to learn new skills and apply these...

can anyone help..

The easiest way would be through modifying the css..
The standard template is pretty simple and the appearance can be changed considerably through the css file.

Yes, but how would you add the rolling merchant images etc...

not just the coloring..
