Does your Shop Window eat up bandwidth?

I literally threw up my site and have left it, so it obviously doesn't do much. I allocated it 1.95 gig bandwidth and although according to google analytics it has received less than 300 unique visits in the last month it has already eaten up 70% of the bandwidth!

Now I can up the bandwidth, but surely this is ridiculous!

That is low bandwidth! - Really low!

The bandwidth is being eaten up by bots, scrapers, harvesters, scumbags, etc etc - a rough approximation would be for every visitor to a standard installation then plan on about 1000 spider visits.

So, there is a core bandwidth requirement just to serve the bots and all.

I have a similar issue so I'm trying to find the point in the code where everything is outputted (Geez a clue George). From there, I can remove all line breaks so all source code will output on just one line, saving who knows how much bandwidth.

It sounds like most of your bandwidth is coming from bots, as Paul said. Some bots are legitimate but still eat your bandwidth. Heres what I have in my .htaccess (very last entry):

IRLBot crawls faster than any other and is a bandwidth eating, educational bot from Harvard Uni. It sometimes changes it's agent, but always sticks to the User-agent: IRLbot in robots.txt

I cut my call count by over 50% with the above.

Ive sussed out the mod.

tests save me nearly 2Mb per 1000 page views, so it might be worth adding.

Thanks folks. I thought it must be bots or whatever, but just didn't know what to do about it.
